A Re-Write:
I have decided to re-write my Twilight review. Partially because I can be more objective now, having gained some perspective (i.e.: I didn't just finish the book this morning), but also because it looks bad to have my readers' reviews better written and more thoughtful than my own.
So,
Twilight is bad, let's make that clear right away. It's bad in three very distinct and bold ways, each blowing their trumpets loudly - competing with each other. As a result, I'm not sure which is aspect is the worst. So these are in no particular order.
1 - Story is unimpressive
2 - Characters are flat, simple, and worthless
3 - Theme is beyond ridiculous
The Story:
Everyone likes a good story, whether it's a gripping thriller novel, a cinematic masterpiece, or just a Dilbert comic, everyone likes to experience the lives of characters they can both relate to and fantasize being-like. We want to share their emotions, follow them on their adventures, in the best stories we feel what they feel, and we cheer for them when they succeed, sympathize with them when they fail, and fear for their safety when they are in danger.
In each novel a different story is told for each reader, rather - a new story emerges between different reader/author combinations. The writer creates the world and tells the events, but the reader is free to interpret and relate to them according to his/her own life, experiences, and tastes. So though the words of the story are the same, the journey can be different. Which is why it's generally hard to make a clear formula for what is a good story versus what is a bad story.
But that doesn't mean anything goes.
Imagine a story about a romance triangle set in picturesque 19th century England, we follow the lives, fears, and tenderness of two men competing for the same woman. Then, just as the tension is about to boil over - and we're hanging on edge, wondering who will win her hand, with only a few pages to go - aliens invade and use their rayguns to kill everyone in the town. Changing the story from romance to sci-fi out of nowhere, and rendering everything within the story (up until that point) completely irrelevant.
I think we can agree that this is an unsatisfying ending. It might appeal to people who don't care for romances, or people who think it's just a funny ending, but in neither case are they really enjoying the story and connecting with the characters.
So there are limits on what an author can do, and we can make a rough guess about how a story should be structured.
I highly dislike the structure of Twilight.
In the tradition of most story telling we establish character and setting, and very quickly introduce a problem that will continue to intensify until reaching climax, followed by a relief and a resolution. The story usually begins when the problem begins and ends shortly after it is resolved. This is the basic structure of a good story, or more specifically - a story arc.
Anything that doesn't directly contribute/relate to "the problem" is a stray away from the arc, a tangent. This is okay, for instance further setting development or character development might enhance the experience. But the more the writer wanders from the meat-and-potatoes, the more misshapen the story's arc becomes. In general, the tighter the story arc the better.
The problem with Twilight's story is that there is no arc. (Not really.) We are introduced to a character and setting right away, but it takes a while before we're introduced to "the problem" - which is the romantic tension between Edward and Bella, but that is resolved quickly, since, really, no tension exists. They like each other. No one is competing here, no one is trying to disrupt their mutual attraction. Once their feelings are public they leap into each others arms (probably about 1/4 of the way through the book) and what was once the problem (source of tension) is now, effectively, resolved.
But the story continues ... or rambles forward about the simple, boring goings on of their daily high-school driven lives. Once could argue the new "problem" is the strangeness of their relationship - their physical incompatibility for instance, but this problem never recheas climax nor resolves. It's mostly just a novelty ... she's in love with a vampire, okay, that's vaguely interesting... but not 400 pages interesting.
Because there is no real, practical endpoint for the book, Meyer gives us a rather pathetic offering by introducing a "villain" near the end of the book. Someone we don't know anything about, except that he's vicious, tough, and evil. But we don't care about him, because he hasn't been developed. Most good villains aren't flat, they are usually introduced early on and made (st least partially) sympathetic, or at the very least they are directly connected to the main story arc. This villain is nothing like that, he's flat, so he bores us, and we find this new conflict uninteresting because we're blind-sided by it from nowhere. And not for one minute do we see it as a serious threat.
It exists as a cheap, simple, thoughtless way to create cheap, simple, thoughtless tension. And just as we've swallowed it and are beginning to follow this new story arc, beginning to feel a trickle of tension, it resolves itself off-stage. And we wake up, completely unsatisfied - because the tension has built to a climax and we're never given any kind of relief. It's there at its highest point and then ... it's gone. This is a very dissatisfying and unusual way to resolve tension. And certainly not a good way.
It would be like seeing the X-wings in A New Hope on their way to attack the death star, and then a jump-cut to it blowing up and Luke flying away, practically alone. Using his communication to the base over the radio as a cheap device to hand us an info-dump about how he somehow managed to win. But we don't get to see him win. So we aren't satisfied, because we aren't allowed to experience it.
Another example, and perhaps a more relevant one. Let's go back to the romance story we came up with before, the one with the aliens. But let's omit our marsian friends and assume the story ends with one of the men ending up with the girl, and the other guy finding a way to accept that. So we follow every little intimate detail leading to this climax, the three of them are about to confront each other and then ... the book skips ahead to everything suddenly resolved ... and we don't get to be there when it happens.
We know what happens, because we're told vaguely through dialogue (the easiest of all literary devices to abuse) but we're getting it second-hand, which is never as exquisite.
So, on the grounds that the shape and flow of the story is irregular and dissatisfying, I think the story of Twilight is poor - at best.
CHARACTERS:
The story is loaded with minor characters, so I'm only going to focus on the major ones. Bella and Edward. Truly no one else matters.
Edward: In summary, Edward is a very powerful, practically omnipotent, alpha male. He can read minds, he has infinite money, he's supposedly handsome beyond all reason, he cannot die, he's charming, he's faster than a speeding bullet, he can probably leap tall buildings in a single bound, and he's completely ... flat.
There isn't much to him. He doesn't make any kind of major realization, he doesn't develop or grow in any way. He is not a dynamic character. He's completely static. The same at the beginning as at the end. The only difference is, he's found a joy toy. Which, to him, is all Bella is.
He knows a meaningful, lasting relationship is impossible, and dangerous. He even admits so within the dialogue. But he pursues her anyway, because, for the time being, she is the object of his obsession. But he must know that it is only a passing sensation. If he doesn't, then he hasn't learned much about the world in the last 100 years of his life.
He has more years behind him than Mr. Miyagi, but lacks the sagely wisdom that comes with age, instead his behavior and thought patterns are more like the 17-year old he appears to be. (Who, for whatever reason, chooses to retake the same high school classes ad infinitum - talk about hell)
He does not grow, he does not develop, and he does not catch our interest. Appealing only to those girls who fantasize about his body and out-dated charm. Which, incidentally, is what keeps money in Meyer's bank account.
Then there's Bella:
Bella is our Main Character, and our viewpoint, so while we may be let down by Edward, she is situated perfectly to redeem the story. It's her story, and it could be about her as a dynamic character, obtaining wisdom through experience, learning more about herself and the world, growing and become more than she is through both aspiration and perspiration. But she doesn't.
She's not only static but completely lifeless. She is an empty shell with very little personality, very little individuality, she exists only as a window for the reader to vicariously fall in love with Edward. Perhaps if she were even remotely developed, and molded into into an individual with distinct personality it would be harder for Meyer's readership to connect with her, and pretend she is they. Bella's emptiness may accidentally Meyer's pocketbook, but it doesn't help her story.
Bella is as flat as a character can be. Even Ziggy looks developed, dynamic, and interesting by comparison.
So while the journey (story) is uncomfortable and dull, our traveling companions (Edward and Bella) don't make the trip any pleasanter. Leaving only one hope left.. perhaps, just maybe, it's got a good message.
Too bad it dosn't.
THE THEME:
There isn't much of an intentional theme to Twilight et al, except for a brief fleeting reference to a belief in God, but otherwise it's simply the rambling story of a masochistic high-school girl and her all-seeing-all-knowing-blood-thirsty boyfriend.
But there is an accidental theme to the story, and a very very bad one. I don't think Meyer intentionally put this here, or if she did I doubt she realized the fullness of her actions. But this theme, better than anything, connects all the dots and threads the story together - since it is completely consistent from start to finish.
The theme is woman's dependence on man, and her "natural" submission.
I don't like that theme. I oppose it strongly. Which is why I recognize it so easily.
Bella, first of all, is a very bad role-model for young, impressionable girls. She is a push-over, always following Edward's ways and directions, fulfilling his whims and desires, and believing/following him without blinking, too obsessed with his physical, masculine greatness to object to him, or sneak out an occasional independent thought.
At one point she's described as revolving around him, literally, like the earth around the sun. Adjusting herself to better match him, and wanting--without guilt--to give up everything she has, everything she is, her very future and potential, to be with him, forever in his orbit. Forever dependent. She can't live without him.
A good female role model is a strong female, someone with bright ideas, talent, a burning sense of morality, and a hunger to assert herself and change the world. Believing... no, absolutely positive that she is as good as any man. But Bella is not this character. She only obsesses about Edward's superiority, accepting it wholly, and Meyer writes so that Bella is right, Edward is literally superior in every way. He's stronger, he's smarter, he's more clever, he's more rich, he's more attractive. He's basically flawless and Bella is lucky to have him. Their relationship is unequal, out of balance, and therefore a bad one.
She gives him nothing, he gives her everything. She depends on him completely. He controls her completely. And he does not respect her.
He spies on her without her knowledge or permission, watches her like a creepy voyeur, and he follows her around - exactly like a stalker. Were he sick-minded and unattractive Bella would hate him for it, at least she should, and so would the audeince. But since he's the epitome of Bella's desire she loves him for it, she's flattered by the attention. Not for one minute realizing that she's being violated, that she isn't being shown even basic respect for her privacy.
Edward simply does not respect her. And she idolizes him. Just one more way their relationship is unequal. Bella is a bad role-model, and their relationship - which is not love by any means, more like steamy, lusty, childish imitation - is unhealthy and wrong. But girls everywhere are carving hearts into their notebooks with bic pens, dreaming about how much they wish they were Bella, how much they wish they had an Edward to dominate them, and assert his superiority over them.
I object to that. I think it's horrible. And that is why Twilight is a bad book.

57 craps:
yup, that's why I don't like Twilight.
Ah, yes, little grasshopper, you have learned well to snatch the pebble from my hand....
I'm so proud to say you were once my student and that I'm the one who got you thinking about all this years and years ago. (I remember the conversation we had about how you needed to respect women rather than protect them....)
I wish I more men could think like you.
You might want to go read my take on Meyer's three books. I can't link because my version of safari is too old for blogger, but here's the URL:
http://apaperbackwriter.blogspot.com/2007/08/twilight-and-eclipse-of-women-why-i.html
I think you'll be pleased with what I had to say last August and with people's comments on it.
I remember that conversation, that was the beginning of the end for my backwater, culturally-indoctrinated ways.
You make the same point as me but far better. I should link to your post from my own. Perhaps I will, thanks.
Occasionally someone learns something from me. It makes the whole thing worthwhile. :)
Probably the only reason my rant on this subject is a step up from yours is because I ranted about all 3 books, whereas you have only read one. You are quite capable of a good rant; I've seen it on this blog.
THANK YOU.
I have struggled ever since this book came out to try and get people to understand that this book actually isn't all that good. There's an incredibly mindless following of young teenage girls who are completely obsessed with this series to the extent that they don't even consider any other books. After reading it through twice, I still couldn't see the appeal of it, and I thought I was the only one, but at last I've found that at least one other person agrees with me!
Thanks! yes, you rest easily knowing that at least a few of us are sane. Unfortunately, what disturbs me the most about this whole situation, is that (mostly young) women aren't the ones up in arms against the cheuvenism, rather their the ones defending it and relishing it. Completely ignorant to the role they've been tossed in; powerless, quivering, and mindless.
In December of last year I shattered my femur, and am still undecided as to whether it was as painful an experience as the Meyer trilogy. Being a teenage girl, I am inevitably well acquainted with other teenage girls, teenage girls, who, in their infinite wisdom, felt the need to bludgeon me with advice the moment I was sat in a wheelchair. Not only was this irritating, but it was also inexcusably cruel, given that as I couldn't walk, I couldn't escape. Invariably I would be forcibly advised to read "The book of the century" after around a month of persistent chivvying and proclamations regarding the "beautiful fantasy" I agreed to read it, discovering how woefully ill informed I had been, I immediately confronted them as to whether their apparent delight had been a joke, I was met with mad possessive hostility, Jesus Christ. I continue to have to sit through hours of mindless drivel regarding, the atrociously conducted books, I also regret to inform you of the mass produced polyester t-shirts now on sale, broadcasting obscure quotes, by which one member of the cult may recognise another. My only consolation is that I can now walk, and thus escape.
aww u didnt like it...well suck than
alice, well spoken, I would have to say that your little tirade was quite hilarious and your writing skill is above that of the traditional cliche teenage-Meyeres-reader
DragonX, "aww u didnt like it...well suck than"
I'm not sure if this is meant to be a serious comment or not, but it's clear that it isn't meant to be coherent
Well my friends, here's a little something I wrote in response to Twilight. Enjoy. Or don't:
"Twilight” – Stephanie Meyer
A (scathing) Review
This was the most unbelievably pathetic piece of writing I've EVER had the misfortune to encounter. I find it almost impossible to start, for there is so great a multitude of flaws in this book it almost defies logic. But enough of that. Let’s cut to the chase. Twilight has absolutely NO redeeming features and is COMPLETELY unsalvageable. To begin with, the writing alone is completely unacceptable, and I consider it an insult to all of us out there who not only LOVE books, but those who are hoping one day to WRITE one, that something so foul and repugnant could ever be published. Meyer’s poor, unintelligent prose didn't strike me as "dreamy" nor "enticing" as one ill-equipped reviewer puts it - in fact I found it an absolute pain in the backside trying to stagger through the utter bullshit that Meyer postulates in this septic tank of a novel. On the flip side, maybe we should take it as a good omen. If this piece of crap can get published and become a best-seller, those of us with even a gnat’s wing of talent should have nothing to worry about! But anyhow, let us move on to what really is the key issue here. Meyer’s (boring) characters. Let us begin with the protagonist, the grotesquely (and dare I say it, inaccurately) named "Bella Swann", which literally translated means "beautiful swan". Oh how far from the truth a name can be. Beautiful swan? Beautiful swan? Throughout the book I frequently had the urge, whilst sitting quietly on my couch in rural Australia, to leap through the page and bash her face in - those of us who are familiar with the term "Mary Sue" should have no trouble identifying with my rage. Mary Sue, the most hated character in the history of fiction (for those of you unfamiliar with the term, I must direct you to Pat Pflieger's wonderful and informative essay: "Too Good To Be True - 150 years of Mary Sue"). Mary Sue is the embodiment of everything a true literature lover hates. She's a stand-in, an avatar if you will, whose sole purpose is to fulfill every wish and desire of the author. Mary Sue is perfect, and if she does have any flaws at all (for example, Bella's incessant and completely unrealistic, gravity-defying clumsiness) are created only to endear her more to the readers and to her fellow characters. Mary Sue gets to have all the fun, while us the readers, gawk on in disgust. Well I'm sorry to say it Steph, but you're transparent and feeble attempt to make your character in any way likable completely backfired. Bella Swann is the ultimate Mary Sue, she completely dominates every page, and even when she’s not the sole narrator every other character is thinking about her! Whilst reading Twilight, one gets the uncomfortable feeling they're reading some thirteen year old's first attempt at fan fiction on livejournal.com. Boring. Word to the wise Steph, next time you even think of churning out something as utterly burnable as Twilight remember - an enjoyable book allows the reader to slip into the character, to see what he/she sees, feel what he/she feels. A skilled author will create a character who is realistic, or at the very least, believable. When reading Twilight I was most aware of the fact (and made quite ill by it) that this story wasn't written to take the reader on an awesome adventure where Werewolves and Vampires rule the night - it was merely an opportunity for YOU, the AUTHOR to play out YOUR fantasies, YOUR wish-fulfillment. I'm aware that ALL fiction contains a certain degree of self-insertion, but please, next time (if there is one, although I'm sure there will be :() Have at least some consideration for your audience and don’t make it so blatantly and nauseatingly OBVIOUS! You ARE writing for your audience after all. If you wanted to play out some wicked child-hood fantasy you could have at least saved us a good $25 dollars and kept Twilight on your home PC. Thanks! I mean, when it comes down to it Bella Swann is a nobody. She’s described as plain, she doesn’t think (unless it has something to do with how “perfect” and “completely flawless” Edward is. Yeah, we get it, you think he’s hot!) In fact, she is so bland and limp I, as the reader, didn’t WANT to slip into her character. Bella, I don’t know if you recall that scene in the first novel where you took some of your father’s cough ‘n’ cold meds to get some kip after a long day of fretting over Edward? Do us a favor, love. Next time you could also try rifling through Daddy’s liquor cabinet and nicking some scotch. Then, down that WHOLE packet of cough ‘n’ cold, wash it down with some of that whiskey, and LEAVE US ALONE! There is no place in our world for you, Mary Sue. Ah, that felt better. Now, I simply can’t leave without spilling my thoughts on the dull, lifeless and utterly revolting Edward Cullen. Now, as soon as I turned the second page of Twilight I knew that I hated Bella Swann (as evidenced above). However, I pressed on, determined to get to the part EVERYONE was talking about – the dark and mysterious Edward Cullen. Whoa! Rewind! Dark and mysterious? Edward Cullen is anything but. He acts, dresses and talks like a complete and total fag. I felt nothing toward him from the very start, and struggled to find anything, anything in this book at all that I could possibly like. Twilight was hyped so much that I desperately wanted to like it, I sometimes enjoy teen fiction as I’m in my late teens myself, but as soon as Edward Cullen entered the scene, my stomach dropped. No. It couldn’t possibly be, I thought. Two in one book? Yes, that’s right people. Edward Cullen is a Gary Stu. Reader beware: buy ‘Twilight’ at your own peril, for this book should have been called not ‘Twilight’, but ‘Mary Sue & Gary Stu’s Excellent Adventures’. Basically, if you’re looking for a fictional vampire to fall in love with, Eddie’s not your man – he’s boring and totally unrealistic. I am totally aware that throughout the duration of this review I have relentlessly and mercilessly bashed what’s obviously Stephanie Meyer’s pride and joy, but if truth be told I’m only trying to help. Yes, that’s right...help! I hope if Stephanie Meyer was to read this constructive criticism it might just help her out in future ventures. Also, any of you even considering writing a novel, please beware of making your fic a Mary Sue, because basically, me and all those like me, are going to hate it. Toodles!

Well...I respect all of your opinions, however, I think you're totally wrong. You guys just are over-analyzing everything. Bella can cook...so what? I have a friend who's a great cook and she's not an anti-feminist, mindless, idiot like you guys seem to think. I consider myself a feminist and I don't think Bella is a weak, subservient, boring character. If you guys think you're so cool, why don't you go take a look in the mirror? I don't think you'll find you're much more of a "hero" or a "strong protagonist" than Bella. I read this hoping to find an interesting argument about why Twilight sucked. While some of your arguments had merit, I just think that you guys need something to complain about. Go complain about something worthwhile... not some teen girl's novel that has no relevance whatsoever in the real world.
So in short, you respect my opinion---but you see it as a worthless non-argument. (?)
Regarding cooking, it isn't about what Bella can and can't do, it's about motivation. Why does she do it, what makes her tick. In her case she feels a supreme responsibility to fulfill the traditional role of the house-wife, and she falls back on those typical activities to cope with her emotions rather than confront them.
But the real anti-woman argument isn't about her cooking, it's about the fact that she's designed tio be powerless and stupid. She is never empowered to have much influence over the plot, she cannot handle her own problems, and she completely revolves around a male for her sense of self-esteem and protection. She is not--by any stretch of imagination--a strong, capable woman. She embodies weakness. And virtually all her ideas are shot down by Edward, to the point where she rarely has them. Adding that to the fact she is extremely non-objective. She's an idiot, plain and simple.
So, I don't see how a weak girl, completely dependent on men, who's an idiot, is a great role-model and example for women. Especially one who represents and reinforces all the stereotypes that women have struggled against since the dawn of time.
Ah, I read Twilight. I'm female. And I actually liked it. But I also liked your review. Very good points.
When I was reading it I did notice a lot of things that didn't make Bella a very good role model. They also weren't dealt with directly in the book, which, if you stop to think and aren't distracted by the romance, is kind of annoying. But I felt she wasn't without ANY redeeming qualities... I'd say she was realistic for a person without much confidence, thrown into situations which demand more. In that sense the personality issues she had were realistic ones.
I'm willing to give the next book a try anyway, hoping she'll get some positive character development, relationship development etc., since it was a quick read. Ultimately, it could be better story-wise if her character takes more time to "grow up" emotionally... But if that doesn't happen, then you were right. :)
Does anybody else get the feeling that Bella is the embodiment of a subconcious desire by highly empowered women to play out the fantasy for the damsel in distress who is completely cared for, protected, and dominated by a caveman type?
C.E. Christensen,
Amazing. I believe I have used the exact same phrase "Whilst reading Twilight, one gets the uncomfortable feeling they're reading some thirteen year old's first attempt at fan fiction on livejournal.com." many many times when describing this book.
I agree with this entirely. No one else I talk to seems to get how disgusting Bella and Edward's relationship is. There is nothing loving about basing your entire life around one person. Giving up all plans of college, career, friends, family, hobbies, individuality for one man. She's willing to give up every single human experience to spend eternity with this man. He's going to live forever, I fail to see the reasoning behind not waiting a year or two to savor the simple things like food, sunlight, and warmth. Does she understand that once these are gone they will never come back? But of course she lives purely for Edward and doesn't care about anything else.
During the second book (sorry if i'm spoiling) when he leaves for that year or however long it was, she becomes a zombie. She recognizes the fact that she is simply a zombie, a shell of a person, but does not care. A healthy relationship would be to concentrate more on your hobbies, your friends, not to give up all will to do anything more than cook and make it through the day. And when she does find something to bring her out of her catatonic state, it is of course another man. At least Jacob cares about Bella's thoughts, feelings, and decisions. But its still not the healthiest relationship.
I also agree with the comment someone made about how Edward's "love" is based on nothing but her scent. I wonder if he even knows or cares about any of Bella's likes, interests, and desires. It seems all he cares about is having her alive. Everyone makes a big deal about how he must love her because he can resist killing her. That's not love at all. That's common courtesy for a supposedly "civilized" vampire.
It's so frustrating to see the cult-like following this book has when it seems that all these girls are just real-life Bellas. To not see anything wrong with Edward is disgusting. The only good thing I can say about him is that he forced her to fill out college apps, hinting that maybe he cares more about her than it seems. But still unlikely.
I hope that young girls (funny to say since i'm only 19) see that this is not how life should be. Family, yourself, your dreams, your safety, your talents, they need to come first. To give up everything in your life for one person is truly revolting. I shudder to think of the many years of progress this book is undoing in the lives of women.
Thank God you don't belong to the millions of people that thought Twilight is a phenomenon.
Thank God you didn't belong to the reviewers that rated Stephenie Meyer as one of the most promising authors.
Thanks god your so much more smarter than a lot of people.
Maybe you should right a book, I bet it would be a "New York Times Best Seller"!!!
Thank you.
Huh. Well, while I understand what's being said and while I'm not exactly a crazed fan of these books, I think that the "unintentional" theme is getting a little bit blown out of proportion. Having been a young teenage girl once, I remember what it was like to have a crush and I remember what it was like to fall in love. We would all like to think that we aren't subservient but the truth is that I know plenty of women, feminists all, with powerful abilities and strong personalities who became a completely different person when they fell in love the first time. Just because it's unpleasant doesn't mean it's inaccurate. Not every woman is going to react this way, but some do. That doesn't make it wrong, it makes the character human. We aren't all strong all the time, much as we might like to be. Plenty of women I know, including myself, were at one time very timid and thought very little of themselves.I would say all of those friends or almost all have grown into bright, witty, self-confident women likely take on (and beat) men in political and social debates.
As for the other critiques, yes, it probably should have been edited down and I don't think the writing is necessarily spectacular. However, for what it is, a vampire novel written from the surprisingly accurate voice of a 17 year old girl, the book delivers what it intends--fun, fluff. Certainly not the book of the century, but hardly a work of evil.
Yes, I can't argue that the book doesn't deliver on what it promises.
But having a boring and brittle main character completely revolve around "the perfect man," and then portray it as ideal is not accurate, and it's not healthy.
And no one said it was evil. Just bad. There is a distinct difference.
i wish Bella gave me more to recommend to the teenage girls in my life. but poor Bella is a non-entity and utterly powerless. i do not believe she represents accurately the best that a 17 year old girl can be, and i certainly do not want my daughters keeping her company for hundreds of pages.
the "maturity" ascribed to her has simply been pasted on (thru her habit of calling her father by his first name, thru her ability to shop and put together meals night in and out, thru her self-reported mothering of her own mom, thru her mom's comment that Bella was "born at the age of 35"). i wanted to believe in wiser-than-her-years Bella, but her behavior just kept talking me out of it. Ms. Meyer tries to have it all in Bella, then. both sage young one and silly, vampire-crazy teenager. and neither ever really comes to life.
i see two other themes in these works which also give me pause.
first, Bella's habit of lying through her teeth at the adults in her life who are trying to help her navigate life on planet earth. what is healthy or mature about denying your pain and telling your mom that everything in your new life is peachy-keen? why not model that real, in-the-moment communication with the people who are on your side leads to personal peace? instead, Meyer shows girls how to ball it up in their guts and get a head-start on that mid-life, stress-related hernia. one more isolated female victim. nice.
second, i'm not crazy about the message that flirting with real, honest to God danger is okay...especially if the dangerous one is cute and drives a Volvo. i hated the scene after Bella went horizontal in science class after smelling blood. Edward physically dragged Bella into his car. "oh well. poor witto me. i guess i'll just have to get in the car with this virtual stranger and let him take me home." hello! was anybody feeling like, "run, baby!! he might rape you!! start screaming and kicking and puking!!" and Edward is never condemned for this behavior. surely because he is so very perfect and gorgeous. can we teach women to look into a man's behavior for cues, rather than his captivating "ochre eyes"?
yuck-o. it's sad that so many young women are cutting their teeth on this best-selling sell-out.
**oops! mid-life, stress related ULCER!!!
please forgive.
That was pretty good, two new points I've failed to bring up and a nice, sharp, biting review, you should write them more often.
Also please note: Volvo is not a dream car. Volvo is the kind of car you want to be in when you need a thousand airbags to save you from your own horrible driving. It's not sexy, and it's not what a hot "young" guy would drive.
Try Viper, Mustang, Corvette, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc... hell, even a Supra would be better.
Or if you want a nice luxury sedan instead of an athletic sports car then go with BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes Benz.
Not Volvo.
Volvo makes me think of an old man who traded in his crusty old buick for something shiny enough to see beyond his cataracts.
I mean, come on Meyer!, what part of Porsche do you not understand?
Hmm.. I agree with what many of you wrote, and disagree as well. I started reading Twilight last week simply because my 15 year old brother said he heard it was "better than Harry Potter", which caught my attention. It bought up my curiosity; what type of book can this be? May I mention that I saw a 10-12 year old reading this when he was eating in the restaurant that I worked at, he informed me it was a "great book". Now, I can say that when I first read twilight I absolutely did love it, probably because I fell into the spell of Edward, yeah I know.. but I couldn't believe it was that great of a book to be such a HUGE hit as I see it being right now, for god sakes even Godiva had the Twilight cover on one of their chocolate products. It's all over barnes & nobles, borders, & to mention there's t-shirts of Edward. I bought the entire series after reading the first one, and I must say I absolutely agree with Cynical that it just skips over the action and it just tells you how things were done. (spoiler) I wanted to read the fight between Edward and James, the description of his face as he saw Bella lay crippled on the floor. Anyhow the second book I truly disliked because it didn't contain too much of the love between Edward and Bella, since she was left alone to be pathetic for 8 whatever months. I thought there would be a better way of Edward and Bella meeting up again, hoping it would be intense. It didn't even seem like he cared that much that she was alive, he should have at least showed more enthusiasm. Now on to the third book, it really pissed me off. Here is Bella clearly being selfish left and right without even the regard toward Edward's feelings. Running off to Jake and what not. He does everything he can to make her happy and here she is hurting him all the time. And then we all find out that she is indeed in love with Jacob, and returns his kiss near the end. Ugh. And all Edward cares is that she is happy, and is not mad at her. The fourth book nearly drove me insane, I just wanted to rip Bella's face off in the part where she was pregnant, meanwhile putting the Cullen family in danger, tearing apart the wolf pack, and still all she cared was about herself. She constantly puts stress around everyone around her, and doesn't even care. And what in the hell is up with naming her child EJ? Edward Jacob? If you clearly love someone dearly you would never name your child the combination of your love's name and the other guy you cheated on (well kissed). She clearly does not care about Edward's feelings, and he needs to just realize that he can do better and dump her off to Jacob. I must admit I disliked Bella in the beginning, but she was tolerable until the third book. I must admit I do sound like a brainless teeny bopper when complaining about the flaws in the story, I just can't understand to see how this book has gotten so 'popular' and is not having a motion picture coming soon. Eh anyways, i'm half way through Breaking Dawn, but I am losing interest as Bella is now a vampire. ugh. I didn't expect to write this much, I guess all my thoughts were accidently spilled on here. Anyways some of you may not agree with me, but i'd just like to say what I felt.
Ah, I have seen that I wrote too much. Sorry guys.
There's no such thing as writing too much. Thanks for your comments, I found them insightful. Especially the spoilers. They confirmed that the series only goes down hill form here, and faster than the superman roller coaster.
Oh you got this so right. For some weird reason, I am guessing the fall in literacy. This book has taken on a life of its own. I was pushed from every corner to read this book by my well meaning friends. The shock to me, is that these women are strong intelligent women. The book is moronic.
If you want to loose yourself in character development, exquisite writing and compelling story line, just pick up Anne Rice. When I hear the excuse that this is made for teenagers, I cringe. What a horrible pathetic excuse. Let's dumb our kids.
I am a 30-year-old gay man living in New York City. I am a singer/songwriter, and an avid reader.I'm good looking, successful, and live a very interesting, cosmopolitan existence. I read everything I can find, but what I love reading the most is fantasy - that's just my preference. I love to be carried away, into a believable, fantastical, magical, different place that is at the same time both different and "the same".
I had heard so much about this series, and of course, I had seen all the product placement and shameless promotion of the series to teenage girls - all over the city.
What is it about our culture right now? I mean, think about it: Gossip Girl, 90210, Real Housewives, The Fucking Hills, Real World, Girls Next Door, the list goes on and on and on. Do you see the trend? Do you see the strange, sad, inexplicable movement towards Women as willing objects? It's fucking disgusting. When I was a youngster (haha, i love that i'm 30 and can say that now), pop culture was all about the empowerment of women. Women's rights! Women are equals! Women have FOUGHT and BLED and STRUGGLED to get to where they are! Sigh......
I haven't even mentioned Twilight yet. I guess I've been avoiding it because it makes me nauseous to even think about it. I'll put it plainly, and in the sad, vapid, common vernacular that today's teenage girls seem to need to hear in order to ascertain any meaning:....it, like...ummmmm....(blank stare while chewing on some lettuce, or perhaps a carrot)....totally sucks?
Fuck you, author-of-Twilight-who-must-not-be-named. You are the enemy. You are the fucking machine. You are a horrible, horrible, talentless writer. Business executives took your book and fucking went in the back room and said "Hell yeah, boys!!! We have a fucking dumb-as-shit bitch in there, who will write exactly what we want to hear, and what we KNOW will sell sell sell if we promote it right! And she'll never fight it, cause she's just a woman! I mean, look at that main character who is OBVIOUSLY her! Weak, willing, and only capable of negative emotions! Perfect! Get the networks on the phone..."
Ugh. Make no mistake, all of you - whether you love or hate Twilight. That book fucking sucks. It's terrible, pointless writing. The author has no talent as an artist. Fuck, she's not an artist, she's a hack. I would love to personally distribute serious bodily harm to ANYONE who puts her in the same sentence as J.K. Rowling or Tolkein for ANY reason. If you are intelligent, if you are proud to be a woman, if you possess critical thinking skills, if you are discerning, if you like to see things as they truly are, rather than accepting what people TELL you things are...then, you cannot accept Twilight as anything more than what it is: worthless.
Well said.
